What is a Family Encyclopedia and what is it for?
The Family Genealogy Encyclopedia, which is custom-made for our clients, is a series of volumes containing a large variety of information on a specific family. The main volume of the encyclopedia is the Pedigree Book.
The Family Genealogy Encyclopedia is a beautiful and monumental work that contains personal information on family trees, as well as family history and culture. Thanks to a logical and well structured layout, the vast amount of material compiled in the encyclopedia is easily accessed and interpreted.
In preparing the encyclopedia, our agency effectively researches, archives and publishes genealogical and biographical data about both contemporaries and ancestors for their relatives and descendants. This process transforms family documents, records and artifacts from a mass of dispersed, disorganized and often disputed materials, into one professionally researched, organized and well presented body of information and illustrations. The result can be accessed and enjoyed with both immense pleasure and pride.
If the information collected by family enthusiasts from personal archives and relatives is not professionally made into a book, or a collection of volumes, it is, as a rule, lost, fragmented or distorted. To publish such a book requires intensive work by experts possessing the required professional skills. It is not only the publisher, but also a great number of experts in genealogy, archival science, biography and history who produces a Family Genealogy Encyclopedia. Presently, the genealogy service market in Russia has grown so much that agencies like ours have resulted from a number of private amateur and professional genealogists. These agencies are able to resolve more serious problems than simply searching in archival documents for several missing generations of a client. More importantly, to create a first-rate family encyclopedia is a multifaceted, serious and laborious professional process that is impossible to be done by the family alone, however dedicated and diligent the family members may be.
How to publish your own Family Encyclopedia?
The work of producing a professionally executed Family Encyclopedia is done stage by stage in four separate steps. Each stage has its own specific and particular feature. In order to decrease the difficulties of creating the encyclopedia, agency experts involved in each of the stages know exactly what should be done at each point. At the same time, the client is allowed to manage the process of creating the encyclopedia, to maintain control over its production, and to note and determine the cost of each stage. In following this system, the agency forges separate contracts with the client at each of the four stages of the production process.
Stage 1: At the first stage the agency searches for primary sources (both private and family history archives and documents, locations of family relics, keepsakes and valuable possessions, etc.) Thus, it becomes possible to determine the eventual content and form of the encyclopedia, and to determine the volume of work needed during the second stage.
Stage 2: The second stage involves the field work in the client's «extended family». This work involves filling up genealogic cards on relatives, correspondence with archives, selection of documents, photos and letters from family archives, as well as interviewing relatives, taking photos of family relics, collections and memorable places.
If the material is collected in sufficient volume the second stage comes to an end under the initiative of the customer. Upon termination of the second stage the customer pays off with agency for the done work on gathering materials.
At this point, the client has an opportunity to determine the amount of collected data and materials to be published in the encyclopedia and to assist in forming its content. If the family tree data has been successfully assembled, the second stage can be completed on the client's initiative. Once the second stage is over, the client pays the agency for its services in performing the search, and gathering materials.
Stage 3: At the third stage all the assembled materials are put into book form. The agency systematizes its findings, determines the basic family tree, organizes the chronological records, retouches photographs and documents to be included in the encyclopedia as illustrations, and finally creates the layout of the book. This stage is completed by making an electronic version of the encyclopedia.
Stage 4: At the beginning of the fourth stage, the client signs an agreement contract with the agency for publishing and binding the book. The contract cost is determined by the size of the book, the quality of the paper and binding, the style of the layout and presentation, the method of printing and the number of copies to be produced.
Payment in advance is required at the first, third and fourth stages of production. Payment at the second stage is made in terms of the steps to be followed.
How much does it cost to publish a Family Encyclopedia?
The Family Encyclopedia is a complex intellectual and publishing product. The complexity in creating such an encyclopedia is that professional experts have to assemble an enormous variety of materials from different sources. Then this data must be presented in a variety of accurate, well composed, accessible and pleasing artistic forms. Mistakes and inaccuracies must be avoided. To reach such a standard is possible only by a lengthy coordinated project by a great number of experts in searching, systematizing and presenting a wide variety of textual, oral, documentary and graphical information.
To publish a typical genealogical encyclopedia is an expensive proposition today and it costs several tens of thousands of dollars. The exact cost of production is determined by the amount and complexity of the collected materials, as well as the manner of their presentation.
This immense task leads to the fact that the price of such a publication becomes too high even for the middle class. Simply put, for obvious and objective reasons, a genealogy service must be classified as a luxury service.
What is the difference between our agency and others?
Our agency can decrease the difficulties some clients may have when trying to assemble their own genealogical documents, or when using the services of our competitors. The family tree is the main element that combines all of our efforts into a single product. We will not consider a lack of historical data as a roadblock to publication. Family relationships are much larger, deeper and more important than mere genealogy, and can serve as an independent basis and reason for the encyclopedia. In cases when the documentary records of the family history are lost, we are still able to publish the encyclopedia using genealogical information about living relatives. It is possible to gather a lot of interesting and detailed information about grandparents, parents, sisters and brothers for their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and then immortalize this precious information in a properly constructed and professionally produced book.
A Brief Introduction to the Family Archives Genealogical Agency?
Since 2002, The Family Archives Genealogy Agency has published several unique series of books called private family encyclopedias. The agency's main task has been to trace a client's family history tree when starting work on the encyclopedia.
In order to establish the generation list we search for information in Russian and foreign archives, as well as contact different state and public organizations. A great number of genealogists from Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Yekaterinburg and other cities work directly with our agency. The agency carries out extensive consultations with all the family members, collecting their memories and comments about family documents and photographs. It conducts interviews in order to include all necessary and interesting information in the encyclopedia. The agency's workers systemize the family history records of the «extended family» in order to place them into the following topics: «Family Relics and Treasures», «Collections and Hobbies», «Creative Work», «Professional Accomplishments», «Cookery», «Pets» and others. Family correspondence, documents and photographs are assembled in separate volumes. To meet with the client's relatives our agency workers are ready to make business trips to any point on the map. We assist families in finding relatives, restoring lost relationships, and locating ancestors' graves.
The Family Archives Genealogical Agency uses the most modern equipment when searching for information. Databases are formed with the help of professional genealogy programs. After being scanned, all the client's archives are placed in long-term storage according to the rules of archival science. They are interleaved with mica paper and placed into special archival folders and boxes. Each of the volumes of the encyclopedia is a hand-crafted book. The cover is genuine leather, and the pages are produced with silk and gilding.
The Family Archives staff is a great value for the agency. Each employee is professionally experienced and fully qualified, and is both friendly and confidential with clients.
Genealogy is the study of a family's lineage
«Genealogy is the most ancient of all known historical disciplines. Its origin comes from the Greek "genealogia"- family pedigrees. It studies the appearance and development of relative relationships. The earliest records about the ethnogeny, origin of tribes, and single families have been held in myths, epic literature, the Bible and epigraphy. In Russia the word "genealogy" appeared in the XI century in the Old Russian translation Chronicles of Georguy Amartol to mean ‘human pedigrees?. The tradition to keep in memory the names of ancestors and forefathers is an integral feature of all people on the earth. In different historical periods of social relations, the role of genealogy has functioned differently. This scientific discipline has grown from a cult tradition and solved just estate tasks. Further it includes rich possibilities in different branches of modern humanitarian studies, such as biography and literature, name studies, ethnography, area study, historical demography, sociology, law of inheritance, as well as genetics in medicine and other branches of science».
